The County of Barrhead is the centre of one of Alberta's richest agriculture areas. The County of Barrhead is located in north-central Alberta, 122 km north west of Edmonton. It is bounded by Woodlands County to the north and west, Lac Ste. Anne County to the south, and Westlock and Sturgeon Counties to the east.
There are three major rivers flowing within the municipality, Athabasca, Pembina and Paddle. The County of Barrhead includes the Town of Barrhead, with a population of 4,213 and the Hamlets of Neerlandia, Manola, Thunder Lake and Campsie.
Rich in history, the County of Barrhead served two main access roads to the City of Edmonton. The Klondike Trail headed northwest and was used by gold prospectors and the Athabasca trail headed northeast to a trading area. Settlement took place in the early 1900's with settlers and farmers from Europe and the U.S.A.
Agriculture operations and processing is the mainstay of the local economy. Value-added processing of the County's agricultural products contributes to the area's economy. Other economic bases include lumber, oil and gas, manufacturing and retail services. Main employers include Conagra Limited, Neerlandia Cooperative Association and Sepallo Industries.
The County's population from the 2001 census is 5,768. The municipality serves a trading area of over 20,000 people. The County offers a terrific array of recreational opportunities. Our beautiful lakes, scenic byways and special events attract visitors to the Barrhead area from around the world.
Facilities include an 18 hole championship golf course, with a club house expansion under construction. There is also a 9 hole golf course within the Town of Barrhead. The Town offers all recreational facilities including a new ice area, bowling alley, numerous ball diamonds, an indoor swimming pool, and indoor and outdoor rodeo facilities.
The Town is the location of the Barrhead Health Care Centre with 78 active treatment beds. Emergency services of policing, ambulance, fire protection, disaster services and search and rescue are all provided in the community. The school system provides education from kindergarten to Grade 12. Administration offices for Pembina Hills Regional School Division No. 7 are headquartered in Barrhead. The Alberta Distance Learning Centre is also located in Barrhead and is a world leader in delivery of distance learning programs for students Grade 1 to Grade 12.
