In 2006, GROWTH Alberta's Biofuel Committee sponsored research to produce a feedstock report (available on our Publications page) that could be used to attract investment in a local biofuel industry. Using this report as a marketing tool, the committee is working to promote the GROWTH Alberta region to biofuel investors.

Based on the initial findings in this report, Sustainable Energy Holdings Inc. made the decision to conduct full scale research for a potential biofuel project, and the company has recently completed a comprehensive feasibility study for a potential plant in the Westlock area. The report indicates that a plant in the Westlock area is feasible, but success is in some ways dependent on government subsidies and could be adversely affected by volatile commodity prices.

Scott MacKay, CEO of Sustainable Energy Holdings Inc., is in control of the project. His next step may be to proceed through a business planning process with local agricultural partners.

GROWTH Alberta assisted in attracting an interested industry player, and supported data collection and information sharing during the completion of this feasibility study. Now that the feasibility study is complete and the project is in industry hands, the alliance will continue to be a source of information for anyone interested in biofuels investment in the GROWTH Alberta region.
