Action Grizzly Bear LaunchedAlberta Asked to Commit to Recovery and the Dollars RequiredSierra Club Canada · Defenders of Wildlife · Natural Resource Defense Council · USTB Research · West Athabasca Bioregional Society Media Release : Wednesday Nov 19th Calgary: Today, local, national and international conservation organizations have launched "Action Grizzly Bear." Based out of Alberta, which for many years has been on the receding edge of grizzly bear numbers and range in North America, the new collaborative campaign is focused on achieving Alberta and Canadian government action on grizzly bear recovery at a level comparable to what has been ongoing in the United States for more than a decade with positive results. It provides citizens with a vehicle to have their voices heard on behalf of the fewer than 500 grizzly bears remaining in Alberta; a number sharply down from the 1,000 the province committed to retaining habitat for in 1984. Parkland Fall Conference - The Moral of the Story: Art, Culture, Media and PoliticsStart: Nov 14 2008 - 7:00pm - Nov 16 2008 - 4:00pmThe recent U.S. election demonstrated, perhaps beyond any other, that the words we use to frame our politics and the ways we tell our stories are as important, if not more important, than the politics themselves. The recent Canadian election showed the political power of the arts and culture community and their various media for expression. Still, somehow, the dominant political and economic realities in Alberta and Canada do not seem to be changing. What impact do the stories we tell ourselves and others have on this political reality? How would different stories told in different ways through different media impact our politics and society? Come explore these questions with some of the world's leading activists and thinkers on the subjects of the political manifestations of art, culture and media at the Parkland Institute's 12th annual fall conference.

Action Alert: Say no to re-zoning of Edmonton’s prime agricultural land!Start: Nov 12 2008 - 6:45pmCome to City Hall for public hearings on Wednesday, November 12th at 6:45pm and let city council know Edmonton wants Food Security for the downtown! Northeast Edmonton has a unique microclimate and contains the best soils in the province. Presently it is home to a number of market gardens supplying home-grown vegetables and fruits to Edmonton’s downtown and beyond. In a world that is increasingly becoming more unstable, it is important that our decision makers look out for our community health and our security. Paving over some of our best agricultural land for unfettered industrial developments is not smart for sustainable community development. Even though the current Municipal Development Plan speaks to issues of water, energy, transportation and even disaster management, it does not explicitly speak to concerns around food security. We need to demonstrate to city council that local food production, food security and local healthy food are issues that need to be considered! Location
